Steel Profile and Pipe Weight Calculator

Weight per metre, per piece and in total for IPE, HEA, HEB, pipe, hollow sections, angles, flat bar and plate. EN and DIN sizes, section drawing, project list, CSV and PDF.

How to use it

  1. Pick the section type. There are 22 types: pipe, square and rectangular hollow sections, round, square and hexagon bar, flat bar, plate, strip, IPE, IPN, HEA, HEB, HEM, angles, channels, C, T, Z and a custom section.
  2. Standard and size. Choose a listed size or select "Custom size" and type your own dimensions.
  3. Length, quantity, material. Density starts at 7850 kg/m³ for steel and can be changed for stainless steel, aluminium and other metals.
  4. Add to project. Collect several items in one list. The grand total is shown below in kilograms and tonnes.

How is the weight calculated?

Weight is volume times density, and volume is cross-sectional area times length:

Weight = Cross-sectional area × Length × Density

For a pipe the area is the difference between the outer and inner circles:

A = π / 4 × (D² − d²)

D is the outside diameter and d is the inside diameter (d = D − 2t, where t is the wall thickness).

Example: Ø60.3 × 3.2 mm pipe, 6 metres, 10 pieces

  • Inside diameter: 60.3 − 2 × 3.2 = 53.9 mm
  • Cross-sectional area: π / 4 × (60.3² − 53.9²) = 574.0 mm² = 5.74 cm²
  • Weight per metre: 574.0 mm² × 7850 kg/m³ = 4.51 kg/m
  • One pipe: 4.51 × 6 = 27.04 kg
  • Ten pipes: 270.4 kg = 0.270 t

Which values come from tables and which from formulas?

  • From tables: for IPE, IPN, HEA, HEB, HEM, UPN, UPE, angles, T and Z sections the weight per metre is the standard table value (EN 10365, EN 10056-1, EN 10055, DIN 1025, DIN 1026, DIN 1027). These sections have root radii and tapered flanges, so a simple formula does not give the exact figure.
  • From formulas: for pipe, hollow sections, bars, flat bar, plate, strip, C sections and every custom size the weight is calculated from the cross-sectional area. For hollow sections the corner radii are deducted according to the EN 10219 and EN 10210 rules.

The note under the result tells you which of the two was used.

Good to know

  • Results are theoretical. Because of rolling tolerances the real weight can differ by a few percent.
  • Welds, paint and galvanizing are not included.
  • For pipe and hollow sections, not every listed wall thickness is stocked everywhere. Confirm with your supplier before ordering.
  • The table values were not compared line by line with the printed standards. Each row was checked geometrically against its own dimensions. Z 180 and Z 200 are calculated directly from geometry.
  • Saved projects stay in this browser only. Download important lists as CSV or PDF.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use it for stainless steel or aluminium?

Yes. Pick the material from the list or type the density yourself. For standard sections the table value is scaled to the new density.

Can I see kg/ft or lb/ft?

Yes. Choose it under "Unit weight" at the top.

My size is not in the list. What do I do?

Choose "Custom size" in the "Standard" field and enter the dimensions yourself. The drawing follows the dimensions you type.
