PE, PVC and HDPE Pipe Weight
Calculate plastic pipe weight per metre and total weight from outside diameter, wall thickness or SDR, and length. Select a typical density or enter a certified value.
Finding plastic pipe weight
Outside diameter and wall thickness define the annular wall area. Multiplying this area by density gives weight per metre, then multiplying by total length gives the empty pipe mass. PE 100 and HDPE both relate to the PE family. The presets represent typical material data, not universal constants for every product.
Using SDR
SDR is the ratio of outside diameter to wall thickness. A diameter of 110 mm with SDR 11 gives a theoretical wall of 10 mm. At a density of 960 kg/m³, the result is about 3.016 kg/m or 18.096 kg for 6 m. If a standard table rounds the minimum wall, enter that wall value directly.
Scope
Verify density against product documentation. PVC additives and PE formulation affect the result. Sockets and fluid contents are excluded. This calculation does not determine pressure rating or assess strength.
Separate wall thickness from filled pipe weight
Do not use the entire outside minus inside diameter difference as wall thickness. There are two opposite walls, so thickness is half the diameter difference. At unchanged outside diameter, a thicker wall increases pipe mass and reduces available internal volume.
For a numerical example that represents no particular material, choose custom density 1000 kg/m³, outside diameter 60 mm, wall 5 mm and length 3 m. Inside diameter is 60 − 2 × 5 = 50 mm. After conversion to metres, wall area is π × 0.005 × (0.06 − 0.005) = 0.000275π m². Multiplying by density gives linear mass 0.275π kg/m, approximately 0.863938 kg/m. Total mass is 0.825π kg, approximately 2.59181 kg.
This example does not associate the density with a plastic grade. Use documented density and wall thickness for your product. Increasing length scales mass proportionally, while the effect of increasing diameter depends on wall geometry. Do not confuse theoretical wall thickness from SDR with the actual nominal wall of the purchased pipe.
Frequently asked questions
How much does an HDPE pipe weigh?
For example, multiplying the annular area by density and length gives an empty HDPE pipe mass of 11.94 kg for outside diameter 110 mm, wall 10 mm and length 4 m. The approximate density of 950 kg/m³ needs product verification, and sockets, fittings and contained liquid are excluded.
