Material Density Calculator

Find density from mass and volume, or solve for mass or volume. Use liquid displacement for irregular specimens.

Calculating density

Density is mass divided by volume. Weigh the specimen and measure its volume under the same conditions. For example, a mass of 200 g and a volume of 25 cm³ give a density of 8 g/cm³, equivalent to 8000 kg/m³. If density is known, the other tabs solve for mass or volume.

Irregular specimens

Read the initial liquid volume in a measuring vessel. Fully immerse the specimen and read the new volume. The difference is the displaced volume. A rise from 50 mL to 70 mL corresponds to a specimen volume of 20 cm³.

Measurement limits

The simple displacement method cannot be used directly for a floating specimen or one that dissolves or absorbs liquid. For porous materials, specify whether the measured volume includes open and closed pores. The calculator does not estimate measurement uncertainty, apply temperature corrections or identify the material automatically.

Frequently asked questions

How do you calculate material weight in kg?

For an example material volume of 200 cm³ and an assumed density of 5 g/cm³, the mass is 1 kg. Multiply volume by density and convert grams to kilograms, assuming uniform density without temperature correction or uncertainty analysis, and use a measured or documented density for the actual material.
