Quick answers

Conditions and notes

Conversion between units of the same viscosity type only. Factors are exact definitions and displayed numbers are rounded to 7 significant digits.

  • cP and mPa·s, and cSt and mm²/s, are the same value. The header writes them together.
  • Converting between dynamic and kinematic viscosity needs the density and the temperature of the fluid.
  • Viscosity depends strongly on temperature. This chart only converts units and does not give the viscosity of a fluid.

The chart has two separate sections, because there are two separate quantities. Dynamic viscosity (μ) gives the shear resistance of a fluid and kinematic viscosity (ν) is the dynamic viscosity divided by the density. Each row is a starting value. The columns show the same viscosity in the other units. The shaded diagonal cells are the unit itself.

1 cP is exactly 1 mPa·s and 1 cSt is exactly 1 mm²/s, so they share a column. The poise is defined as exactly 0.1 Pa·s and the stokes as exactly 1 cm²/s (0.0001 m²/s). For example, the 1 P row gives 0.1 in the Pa·s column.

Converting dynamic viscosity to kinematic needs the density: ν = μ / ρ. That is not a unit conversion, so there is no jump between the two sections. Time based scales such as Saybolt (SUS), Redwood and Engler are not in this chart, because they do not convert with a constant factor.
