Quick answers

Conditions and notes

Conversion between torque units only. Factors are exact definitions and displayed numbers are rounded to 7 significant digits.

  • This is not a tightening torque recommendation. The bolt class and the lubrication condition determine the tightening torque.
  • kgf·m and lbf·ft depend on standard gravity (9.80665 m/s²), not on the local acceleration.
  • The joule has the same dimension as N·m but measures energy. It is not written in place of torque.

Each row is a starting value. The columns show the same torque in the other units. For example, the 1 lbf·ft row gives about 1.356 in the N·m column. The shaded diagonal cells are the unit itself. The common values section below reads typical torques such as 10 N·m, 25 N·m or 50 lbf·ft at a glance.

Torque is force times lever arm, so its unit is a product of two units. Torques with a force unit such as kgf·m and lbf·ft rest on standard gravity (9.80665 m/s²). lbf·ft and ft·lbf are the same factor, only the order of writing differs. Energy units (joule) and torque units have the same dimension but are different quantities.

This chart only converts units. It does not give a recommended tightening torque for a bolt or nut, because that value depends on the material, the lubrication and the joint.
