Scientific Calculator

Type an expression and see the result at once: trigonometry, logarithms, powers, roots, factorials. Degree and radian modes, memory and history, all in your browser.

What does the scientific calculator do?

You type an expression the way you would write it on paper and the calculator returns the result while following the order of operations. It supports the four basic operations, powers, roots, factorials, percentages, trigonometric and inverse trigonometric functions, hyperbolic functions, natural and base 10 logarithms, absolute value, rounding, minimum and maximum, combinations and permutations. Everything runs in your browser and nothing you type is sent anywhere.

Order of operations

The order is: parentheses, factorial and percent, powers, the minus sign, multiplication and division, addition and subtraction. Powers group from the right, so 2^3^2 equals 2^9 = 512. The minus sign is applied after the power: -2^2 = -4 while (-2)^2 = 4. You may omit the multiplication sign: 2π, 3(4+1) and 2sin(30) are all valid. Omitted multiplication has the same priority as the explicit one, so 1/2π means (1/2)·π. Use parentheses when you mean the whole denominator: 1/(2π).

Example

In degree mode type 2sin(30) + √16. Since sin 30° = 0.5 the first term is 1, the second term is 4 and the result is 5. In radian mode the same expression gives a different result because 30 is then read as radians. Switch the angle unit with the button above the display.

Input rules

  • The decimal separator can be a point or a comma. Do not type thousands separators.
  • For functions that take several arguments (max, min, round, mod, ncr, npr) separate the values with a semicolon.
  • 1.5E-3 means 1.5 times 10 to the power of minus 3.
  • Ans gives the last result. Memory keys: MS stores, M+ adds, M− subtracts, MR recalls and MC clears.

Limits

Numbers are held in double precision floating point: about 15 significant digits are correct and the result is shown rounded to 12 digits. That is why 0.1 + 0.2 shows 0.3. Factorials are computed up to 170 and overflow beyond that. The square root or a fractional power of a negative number, division by zero and the logarithm of a non-positive number are undefined and produce a clear message. Complex numbers and calculations with units are outside the scope of this tool.
