Tank and Reactor Hydraulic Retention Time

Calculate nominal retention time from liquid volume and flow, or find the volume or flow for a target time.

Nominal residence time in a tank

For active liquid volume V and volumetric flow Q, nominal retention time is τ = V/Q. A tank containing 100 m³ with a flow of 20 m³ per hour therefore has a nominal time of 5 hours. The volume tab rearranges the same relationship for a chosen target time.

Interpreting the result

Volume and flow must refer to the same system boundary. A whole plant with internal recycle has a different boundary from an individual tank. This calculation does not recommend a treatment time, determine sludge age or establish effective contact time for disinfection. Evaluate separate operating conditions when flow varies.

Start by drawing the calculation boundary

A tank with active liquid volume 180 m³ and flow 30 m³/h has nominal residence time 180 / 30 = 6 hours. At the same volume and flow 60 m³/h, time falls to 3 hours. Reversing the calculation, flow 30 m³/h with a target of 6 hours gives 180 m³. This checks units and inputs, not the suitability of that target for the process.

Distinguish the tank's external geometric volume from usable liquid volume. Do not count freeboard, packing or equipment displacement as active water volume. When combining compartments, check that volume and flow describe the same boundary. Adding internal recycle to plant inflow without defining the boundary changes the meaning of the time.

A long nominal time does not mean all water stays that long. Minimum contact time cannot be determined without the flow pattern. If flow varies through the day, a daily average can hide short periods of high flow. Calculate separate operating cases and record which active volume belongs to each result.

Frequently asked questions

How do you calculate hydraulic retention time in hours?

Dividing an example active liquid volume of 100 m³ by a flow of 20 m³/h gives a nominal hydraulic retention time of 5 hours. This preliminary calculation requires volume and flow to refer to the same system boundary and does not establish sludge age or sufficient actual disinfection contact time.
