Carbon Emissions and Fuel CO₂ Equivalent
Estimate CO₂ equivalent from electricity or fuel use with your own emission factor, including fuel use calculated from travel distance.
Activity and emission factors
An emissions estimate multiplies an activity quantity by its matching factor. Enter a CO₂ equivalent factor per kWh for electricity or per litre for liquid fuel. The initial factors of 0.5 and 2 are arithmetic examples only. They are not verified values for any country, year or fuel.
Fuel calculation
A distance of 500 km at 8 L/100 km uses 40 L of fuel. With the example factor of 2 kg CO₂e/L, the result is 80 kg CO₂e. For actual reporting, establish the factor publication year, units, gas coverage and system boundary. A combustion only factor excludes fuel production and transport. This calculator uses an aggregate CO₂e factor and does not apply separate warming potentials to individual gases.
Match the factor unit to the result
Take example electricity consumption 250 kWh and an illustrative factor of 0.4 kg CO₂e/kWh. The estimate is 250 × 0.4 = 100 kg CO₂e. Expressed in tonnes, this is 0.1 t CO₂e. This factor is not verified for a country, year or supplier. Use a source matched to the activity in an actual report.
If a factor already includes carbon dioxide equivalent, applying another warming potential can count the conversion twice. Do not label a carbon dioxide only factor as covering all greenhouse gases. Adding electricity consumption impacts and fuel production impacts without defining a shared boundary can also create a misleading total.
Check kilogram and tonne conversion in the factor as well as the result. A factor per litre cannot be multiplied directly by fuel mass in kilograms. That requires suitable density information. Retain activity dates, measurement or invoice evidence and the stages included in the factor. The tool multiplies supplied data without checking inventory completeness or reporting standard compliance. When comparing scenarios, state whether only activity or also factor scope has changed.
Frequently asked questions
How do you calculate carbon emissions from electricity consumption?
Electricity use of 1000 kWh with an example factor of 0.5 kg CO₂e/kWh gives 500 kg CO₂e of emissions. In this preliminary calculation, multiply activity by its factor, noting that this example factor is not verified for any country or year and actual reporting requires a documented factor with matching boundaries and gas coverage.
