Tile and Flooring Quantity Calculator
Tile count, boxes and grout quantity from area, tile size and waste allowance, plus box count and skirting pieces for laminate and parquet flooring.
How many boxes of tiles?
Tile quantities take three steps. First divide the area by the area one tile covers together with its joint. Then add a waste allowance for cuts and breakage and round up. Finally divide by the number of tiles in a box and round up again, because boxes are not split.
net tiles = area / [(length + joint) × (width + joint)]
Example
A 20 m² floor with 60 × 60 cm tiles, 3 mm joints and 10 percent waste: one tile with its joint covers 0.3636 m², so 55 tiles net. With waste that is 60.5, so 61 tiles. At 4 tiles per box you buy 16 boxes, which is 23.04 m².
How much waste?
Roughly 5 to 10 percent for straight laying and 10 to 15 percent for diagonal laying. Larger tiles and rooms with many corners mean more cutting waste. Keeping a few spares is wise, because the same shade may not be available later.
Grout
Grout per square metre is (length + width) / (length × width) × joint width × joint depth × density. Consumption rises quickly with small tiles and wide joints.
Flooring and skirting
For laminate and parquet the coverage of a box is printed on it. Divide the area including waste by the box coverage and round up. For skirting, deduct the door widths from the room perimeter and divide the rest by the length of one piece.
Limits
The calculation works on area and knows nothing about the shape of the room or the layout. It gives no adhesive or screed quantity. Box contents and coverage depend on the product, so enter the values from the label.
